The Talaiots de Can Xim (also Talaies de Can Xim or Talaiots de Cas Canar ) are two prehistoric towers on the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . You stand on an agricultural plot of land in the municipality of Sencelles in the region ( comarca ) Pla de Mallorca . The talaiots (from the Catalan word talaia for "observation and watchtower") built on square ground plans are preserved in the lower part. The buildings are attributed to the Iron Age Talaiot culture (also Talayot culture), which Mallorca from 9th to 6th century BC. BC coined.

location

The Talaiots de Can Xim are about 90 meters above sea level on private property near Can Xim . The distance to the center of Sencelles in the north-west is 2 kilometers, that to the district of Cas Canar in the north-east is 230 meters. The Talaiots can be reached on the paved Camí des Campàs path , which begins in Cas Canar on the MA-3140 road. The preserved remains of the tower structures are located 20 meters south of the Camí des Campàs behind a metal gate that blocks the way to the Talaiots.

description

Northwest Talaiot

Among the towers of the Talaiotic culture, a distinction is made between square and round structures (Catalan talaiot square and talaiot circular ). Both Talaiots de Can Xim are square towers in terms of their layout. They stand only 17.76 meters apart and are approximately 11 meters wide. The remaining height is 2.80 meters. The north-western talaiot, partly surrounded by a modern wall, is better preserved than the south-eastern one, the interior of which can be accessed with its central column.

So far, excavations have only taken place at the lower southeast Talaiot , so that it is easily accessible. The three-part central column was exposed. The northwestern Talaiot is mostly filled with earth and stones and overgrown with vegetation. A visible stone in its center could be the upper end of a central column, as it is also possessed by the southeast talaiot. Both have angled access to the interior, similar to the round Talaiot de Son Fred , which is rare in Mallorca's talaiot buildings. The entrance to the northwestern talaiot, unlike the others on the island, is on the southwest side instead of the southeast. The Talaiots de Can Xim are considered the ceremonial center of the Talaiot culture. Nearby, under the western houses of Cas Canar, are the remains of a Talaiotic settlement.
