The Església Parroquial de Nostra Senyora de la Consolació ( Catalan . Spanish : Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Consolación , German : Parish Church of Our Lady of Consolation ) is the Roman Catholic parish church in the municipality of Porreres on the Balearic island of Mallorca . It dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. It is the second largest church on the island after the cathedral in Palma and belongs to the diocese of Mallorca .

The church is one of the most important buildings of the Gothic style on the Balearic Islands .

history

According to tradition, a small church in honor of the Nostra Senyora de la Consolació should have existed in Porreres as early as 1300. In 1666 the construction of today's church began in its place, the nave was not completed until 1714.

Porreres has been an independent parish since 1277.

Architecture and structure

Main portal

Several architectural styles have left their mark since the Middle Ages . At the beginning of the construction, the Gothic architectural style was followed, as is known from Catalonia and southern France.

Exterior design and external impact

Memorial stone to Pedro Juan Campins Barcelo

The church is a free-standing, east-west facing building with a gable roof , and is surrounded by tall palm trees. The building dominates the urban area of Porreres due to its size. The appearance of the church is defiant, despite the simple exterior facade. The front of the church is divided into four levels and an attic by cornices . In the middle of the building, between the third and fourth levels, there is a large rose window ( ox-eye ).

In contrast to the facade, the baroque main portal is decorated and supported by two columns. Above the lintel there is a portrait of the Madonna of Consolation ( Senyora de la Consolació ). The door is a simple wooden construction.

The cathedral is about 84 m long, 17 m wide and (excluding the tower) 25 m high.

Next to the entrance to the church is a memorial stone with a half-sculpture of Pedro Juan Campins Barcelo , the Bishop of Mallorca from 1898 to 1915. He was the parish priest from 1887 to 1893. A sundial from 1798 can be seen on the right side of the facade.

Bell tower

The bell tower is divided into seven sections by ledges. Above the tower there is a terrace with a dock railing and the tower has a pyramid helmet .

inner space

In the interior there is a single-nave barrel vault, which is supported by arches and rests on eight flat Roman pillars. Because of the artistic wealth installed in the church, the church is also called a rural cathedral . Due to the simple exterior facade, the splendor of the interior is usually not suspected.

High altar

The high altar in a chapel with shell-like ornaments rests on a base made of red marble from Binissalem . The high altar was created by Josep Sastre in 1762.

Side chapels

In the six side chapels there are side altars made of marble.

Choir loft

According to tradition, the choir gallery is said to have served the Templars once. The chairs in it from 1447 are richly decorated with sculptures and coats of arms (biblical and heraldic motifs).

Passion Cross

An important part of the church treasure is a processional cross with punched pictures and crowned by an eagle by the artist Antonio Olivia from the 14th century. The front shows pictures of the Passion and Resurrection , the reverse shows Christ in Glory with the four evangelists . The cross was formerly owned by the Knights Templar . The processional cross is considered to be one of the most valuable Gothic treasures in Mallorca and is kept in the sacristy .
