The Castell de Santueri is the ruin of a rock castle on the 408 m high table mountain Puig de Santueri in the mountains of the east, the Serres de Llevant in the municipality of Felanitx on Mallorca / Spain . It is located about seven kilometers southeast of Felanitx.

In the 14th century a new fortress was built by the Spanish crown on the remains of a previous hilltop castle . a. served to protect against attacks by pirates. The fortress fell into disrepair since the 18th century . Numerous extensive parts such as enclosing walls and towers have been preserved from the fort castle , which was built from white limestone .

Previous buildings

A fortress was built on the ridge as early as Roman times (after 123 BC ). After the conquest of Mallorca by the emirate of Cordoba (902 AD ), the mountain top was also secured with a fortress. The crew of the fortress resisted the conquest of Mallorca ( Reconquista ) from 1229 by Jacob I of Aragon for a year before it fell and was almost completely razed .

Others

The ruin can be reached via a road that branches off the Ma-14 towards Santanyi. Due to the exposed location, the place grants a good view. Due to restoration work, the site was not accessible from 2011 to 2014.

Other similar rock castles on Mallorca of the same type are the Castell d'Alaró in the northwest and the Castell del Rei in the north.
