Barceló Dlouha Cesta Praha ( Prague )

The Grupo Barceló is an international hotel and tourism group from Spain. The fully family owned company is headquartered in Palma . It is divided into the areas of Barceló Hotels & Resorts ( hotel business ) and Barceló Viajes (holiday travel). The Barceló Hotels & Resorts division has 95 hotels in 16 countries. In the USA, the group has stakes in 74 other hotels. Barceló Viajes runs 400 travel agencies in 22 countries and also has several aircraft.

history

In 1931, the farmer's son Simón Barceló Obrador (1902-1958) from Felanitx , Mallorca bought a bus with twenty seats for 3,000 borrowed pesetas , from then on served the Felanitx - Palma route with people and goods and thus founded the transport company Autocares Barceló . As early as 1936, four buses drove under this name. As early as the 1950s, under the founder's son, Gabriel Barceló (* 1928), the small company gradually developed from a transport company to a travel agency in the wake of the rise of mass tourism . In 1960, two years after the company's founder passed away, they set up their own travel agency called Barceló Viajes . In 1962 the first hotel, called Latino , was added, which was acquired in Palma. That was the hour of birth of the Barceló Hotels & Resorts division .

In 1965, the first hotel complex specially designed for families opened in Palma de Mallorca. Contrary to the usual trend of building the hotels upwards, the Barceló Pueblo Palma was designed horizontally over an area of 18,000 square meters and was the first of its kind, the resort hotels. The rooms were in two-story buildings. There was a main building, sports facilities, swimming pools, shopping facilities, a gym and also an own hairdressing studio. It is still owned by the company today. The part of the name Barceló Pueblo stands for similar systems worldwide.

expansion

With the growing tourism boom in Spain, the group of companies expanded further. The first hotel complex on the mainland was the Barceló Pueblo in Benidorm in 1970 . The group began its international positioning in 1981 with the acquisition of the tour operator Turavia . Four years later, the Barceló Bavaro Beach Resort opened , the first resort of a Spanish chain in the Dominican Republic ( Punta Cana ).

The first Barceló hotel opened in the USA in 1992 (in Washington, DC ). With the takeover of the investment company Crestline Capital in 2002 , which manages 7,000 hotel rooms in 12 US states, the next leap in growth followed. As a result, the USA with 66 hotels at the time became one of the most important markets for the Barcelós.

The Barceló Hotels & Resorts division developed a strategic plan between 2005 and 2010 to further accelerate the growth of the group. It acquired or leased 20 to 40 new hotels each year, mainly in urban areas, with the upscale four- to five- star hotels being preferred. During the global financial crisis , the planned growth slowed down from 2007. In addition, the contracts of unprofitable hotels were no longer renewed, which primarily included simple and medium-sized hotels. Due to the partial exit from the American subsidiary Barceló Crestline in 2014, the former number of all Barceló-owned hotels shrank from 180 in 2009 to today's 95, mostly high-priced hotels. In the USA, however, Grupo Barceló still holds 40% of the investment company Barceló Crestline and thus operates 74 hotels there. There is also a 42.5% stake in Occidental Hotels , which operates 11 hotels with 4,000 rooms in Mexico and the Caribbean . This made it one of the three largest hotel chains in Spain and one of the 30 largest hotel chains in the world. From 2015, the old expansion course was returned to.

Headlines

"Conflict and Agreement with Nicaragua"

In the course of the privatizations after the rule of the Sandinista and the unclear land ownership they caused , Grupo Barceló acquired the former residence of the former dictator Somoza, including a small airfield, and converted the property into a hotel. However, some lands were not allowed to go on sale at all, or were bought by Grupo Barceló at below market prices. After calling on ICSID , an international arbitration organization based in the USA, it was agreed that Barceló would expand the airfield into an airport used for developing tourism, after which 75% would become the property of the Nicaraguan state.

"Outbreak of diarrhea leads to the closure of Barceló Playa in Costa Rica"

Because of the occurrence of diarrhea and vomiting in 150 hotel guests, the Ministry of Health of Costa Rica ordered at the end of December 2010 that the Barceló Playa Tambor hotel on the Pacific coast be temporarily closed.

The cause was initially unknown. Although some salmonella were found in the kitchen, these were not the cause of the mass disease. An infection with human noroviruses could finally be determined as the cause. The hotel was reopened at the beginning of 2011 without any complaints.
