The hotels of the brands Steigenberger Hotels & Resorts, MAXX by Steigenberger, Jaz in the City as well as IntercityHotel and Zleep Hotels are located in 19 countries, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Spain, Egypt, Oman, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates and China. In 2019, the hotel group announced its global expansion plan, which aims to expand the global portfolio to 250 hotels by 2024.

The company was founded in 1930 by Albert Steigenberger and was owned by the descendants of the founder, who died in 1958, as a family business until it was sold in August 2009 .

Thomas Willms has been CEO of Steigenberger Hotels AG since January 2018. He runs the company with Matthias Heck, the hotel company's CFO and Labor Director.

history

Steigenberger Frankfurter Hof
A. Steigenberger Hotelgesellschaft KGaA shares of DM 1000 in December 1954

In 1930 the businessman Albert Steigenberger took over his first hotel, the Europäische Hof in Baden-Baden . Ten years later, Steigenberger acquired the Frankfurter Hof in Frankfurt am Main, which was partially destroyed in a bomb attack in 1944. It reopened in 1948 with initially 20 beds, five years later it was able to resume full operation.

Albert Steigenberger used the post-war years 1949 to 1958 to expand his company. He acquired six new hotels in important business locations in the young Federal Republic. The company's founder died in 1958 and his son Egon Steigenberger (1926–1985) took over the business.

Egon Steigenberger continued on the expansion course. In 1972 he acquired the hotel management school in Bad Reichenhall in order to train the next generation from his own ranks at the highest level. Further subsidiaries emerged, such as the Frankhof-Kellerei in Hochheim am Main , the * H * E * A * D Hotel Equipment and Design GmbH for facilities and equipment for hotel businesses and the Steigenberger Consulting GmbH, a consultancy for the hotel and tourism sectors.

In the 1970s, the Steigenberger son developed new hotel concepts such as animation , sports, culture and health programs. The prototypes were made in Bad Kissingen , Grafenau , Bad Neuenahr and at Frankfurt Airport .

Egon Steigenberger died in 1985. The company was converted into a stock corporation in which the Steigenberger family held 99.6% of the shares. The hotel chain was run by his widow Anne-Marie Steigenberger. The daughters Bettina, Christina and Claudia Steigenberger also entered the business; Son Albert Steigenberger Junior had his inheritance paid off. In mid-1989, the company and the Deutsche Bundesbahn announced that they would jointly operate the IntercityHotels (see below under brands ) through IntercityHotel GmbH , which was founded at the end of 1987 . In this train, Steigenberger acquired 49 percent of the shares in the company that was previously fully owned by DB.

The 1990s were the company's most expansive period. More than 40 new hotels were opened, including five hotels in Austria. A second house was opened at Frankfurt Airport and Steigenberger took over the management of the German government's guest house on Petersberg .

In 2006 Steigenberger opened its first store in Italy ( Meran - South Tyrol ), but parted ways with it in September 2009.

In October 2008 it became known that the owner family was considering selling the hotel chain. The US hotel company Marriott International was initially identified as a possible buyer . The background to the exploration was evidently the dissatisfaction of the shareholders with the profitability of the hotel chain; In 2007 Steigenberger Hotels AG was only able to post an annual surplus of EUR 200,000. In August 2009 all shares held by the owner family were sold to the Egyptian tourism group Travco .

On October 4, 2016 it was announced that the Steigenberger Hotel Group is renaming itself to the new umbrella brand "Deutsche Hospitality". This is expected to result in "greater international radiance". The hotel brand “Steigenberger Hotels and Resorts” and Steigenberger Hotels AG as a legal entity keep their respective names.

In March 2018, Deutsche Hospitality launched another hotel brand. MAXX by Steigenberger occupies the upscale segment and fills the previous space between the brands Steigenberger Hotels and Resorts, IntercityHotel and Jaz in the City.

In January 2019 it became known that Deutsche Hospitality had taken over 51% of the Danish hotel group Zleep Hotels and that a fifth brand had been successfully integrated.

According to press releases in November 2019, Deutsche Hospitality was taken over by the Chinese Huazhu Group .
