Nizwa ( Arabic نزوى, DMG Nizwā ) is a city in Oman , it is the center of the Omani heartland. The oasis city is located on the southern edge of the Hajar Mountains near the Jabal al-Achdar , the highest mountain range in Oman, about 180 km from the capital Muscat .

history

The extensive gardens and palm groves of the oasis city are dominated by the old fortress with Oman's largest tower (36 m in diameter, 30 m in height). More than 500 years old Falaj canals lead water into the oasis. Nizwa is an old trading center with a large souq , the western souq has been renovated and offers traditional silversmith products, the eastern one is still in its original state with spices and Omani household items.

Nizwa has always been a political and religious center of Oman. In 751 the first Imam of the Ibadites was elected. Nizwa was the state capital until the 12th century, when Bahla got this role. From the 17th century, during the Yaruba dynasty , it was once again the capital. Until Sultan Said ibn Taimur, with the help of the British, gained power over the interior of the country in 1955 and visited Nizwa for the first time, Nizwa was the capital of the Ibadit imamate of Inner Oman .
