Punta Cana is a town in the east of the Dominican Republic in the district of Verón - Punta Cana ( Distrito Municipal Verón Punta Cana ) in the province of La Altagracia . The name is derived from the headland at the eastern end of the island (Spanish: Punta ) and from the Cana palm trees (Coccothrinax argentea) that grow there.

The Verón - Punta Cana district has 54,000 inhabitants (as of 2013).

The southeast coast of the Dominican Republic is known for its beautiful beaches and turquoise blue sea. An elongated coral reef acts as natural surf protection on this coast . In particular, the almost 50 km long Playa Bavaro, to which the Playa de Arena Gorda also belongs, is a magnet for tourists from all over the world due to its picturesque atmosphere. With almost 2.7 million foreign visitors, Punta Cana was the 44th most visited city in the world in 2016 and third in Latin America. Tourists brought in just under $ 3 billion in revenue that same year. Most of the foreign visitors came from the USA.
