Guillem Sagrera
Guillem Sagrera (* 1380 in Felanitx on Mallorca , † 1456 in Naples ) was a Spanish sculptor , builder and architect of the Gothic.
Life
Guillem Sagrera was born the son of the stonemason Antoni Sagrera. As early as 1397 he was working with his father in the Mirador workshop as a stonemason and sculptor. There he received his first training, especially from Jean de Valenciennes , a sculptor from France.
In 1404 he worked with Jean de Valenciennes at the Franciscan Church of Sant Jaume in Perpignan . In 1410 he directed the restoration of the tower of the cathedral Sainte-Eulalie-et-Sainte-Julie in Elne , where he also made sculptures and the coat of arms of Bishop Jerónimo de Ocón . During this time he was appointed master stonemason. In 1416 further work followed on the Cathedral of Sant Joan Baptista in Perpignan.
Sagrera's most intense creative period was in the period from 1420 to 1447. At that time he was married to Jaumina Tura . He had a group of employees, among them Antoni Jaume , the Vilasclar brothers and later his two sons. During this time, the work on the Cathedral of Palma and Llotja dels Mercaders , also in Palma , arose . The last phase of his activity took place in Naples between 1447 and 1455 at the court of Alfonso V (Aragón) , where he directed the renovation work on Castel Nuovo .
