Cala d'Or is a place and ageography
The place Cala d'Or belongs to the municipality of Santanyí . The distance to Palma is about 60 kilometers.
The place Cala d'Or unfolds along the coastline on three semicircular headlands and districts, called: Cala d'Or (center), Cala Egos (west) and Cala Ferrera (east). The part east of Avenida Felanitx around Cala Ferrera and Cala Serena already belongs to the municipality of Felanitx .
The rugged rocky coast is broken through by several bays with sandy beaches. From east to west these are: Cala Esmeralda (the green one), Cala Gran (the big one), the eponymous Cala d'Or (the golden one, also called Caló de ses Dones) and the Cala Llonga (the long one, also Cala d ' es Forti) with the little Caló d'es Pou . In the western district of Cala Egos these are: Cala Egos , Cala Galera and Caló des Llamp . In the eastern district of Cala Ferrera (already part of Felanitx) these are: Cala Ferrera and Cala Serena (the serene).
The neighboring town of Portopetro can be reached by bus or car in around five to ten minutes.
history
The Es Forti fortification , built in 1740 and rebuilt after an earthquake in 1793, used to serve as a defense against pirate attacks and protected the small harbor. Today the fort is one of the few historical sights of Cala d'Or and Santanyí. The square structure has a side length of 26 meters each. There are hatches for cannons on both sides facing the sea. There are loopholes on both sides facing the land to repel ground attacks. The fort had four cannons and a crew of 19 soldiers.
Around 1932 Josep Costa Ferrer (1876 to 1971), an artist, illustrator and architect from Ibiza , also known as Don Pep Costa, planned a modernly designed settlement as a future holiday destination. He bought the coastal strip in 1933 and parceled out the land to make space for 48 villas, a hotel, a church and sports facilities. The name goes back to him, which was originally after the Cala d'Hort in Ibiza, but was perceived as irritating by the first Mallorcan residents and was quickly changed to Cala d'Or ("Golden Bay"). He was later followed by Colin Fowler and Clive Bush.
Place and port
The center of the village of Cala d'Or is located on both sides of the Avenida Boulevard d'Or between the Complejo de Font Major (building) and the Plaza de Ibiza (las Columnas) north of Cala d'Or (bay) and Cala Gran (bay ). More shops, restaurants and bars can be found in the northeast in Cala Ferrera (district) along the S'Espalmador near Cala Ferrera (bay) and Cala Esmeralda (bay), and in the southwest in Cala Egos (district) along Avenida de Marina the Cala Egos (bay) and along the Avenida de Cala Llonga in the marina and the Avenida de Baixada al Port.
Many buildings in Cala d'Or are painted white according to the Mediterranean tradition and designed in the construction method using flat, cubic forms in the Ibiza style. This is no coincidence, because the Ibizan architect Josep Costa Ferrer was inspired by his homeland when planning the building.
The Santa María del Mar Church was built in 1956. The Patronatstag is 21 August. For the Santa Maria del Mar festival, public events are organized in Cala d'Or in the first half of August, including sports competitions and games for children, young people and adults, (craft) market, fiesta nocturna, concert, open-air cinema and of course a religious procession , the latter on August 15th (Assumption of Mary).
The town center is very busy in the summer months, but not overcrowded like other tourist centers on Mallorca. In the pedestrian zone near Avenida Boulevard d'Or there are a large number of shops, bars and restaurants with local and international cuisine.
The marina is located in the largest bay of Cala Llonga, the marina offers 563 berths on 30,000 m² of mooring for exclusive yachts and charter boats, as well as protection from storms. There are also many exclusive restaurants and bars there.
traffic
Motor vehicles can be accessed via numerous roundabouts (1–19), which are decorated with sculptures or decorated with plants. If you are coming from Calonge from the north, roundabout 1 is the northern entrance to the town, and if you are coming from Portopetro from the west, roundabout 11 is the western entrance to the town. Coming from S'Horta from the northeast, roundabout 6 is the eastern entrance to the town.
A mini train runs regularly between the bays and beaches and connects all districts of Cala d'Or.
The Red Bus of the private bus company ( TIB ) connects Cala d'Or with other municipalities and cities.
