Cala sa Nau is a small, narrow bay in the east of the Balearic island of Mallorca . It is located in the eastern part of the municipality of Felanitx between Cala d'Or and Portocolom .

Location and description

The S-shaped bay has a width of about 200 meters and a length of about 400 meters. It is located 1.5 kilometers north of Cala d'Or and forms a cut in the approximately 10 meter high limestone of this coast. The surrounding area consists mainly of open brown limestone with many caves, especially on the coast. The bay's steep walls and caves are a well-known climbing area. Wherever possible, the land is overgrown with pine trees , junipers and shrubbery. At the end of the bay there is a sandy beach about 60 meters wide and 70 meters long. The area around the bay is almost completely natural. On the beach there is a beach bar and a lounger rental. Showers and toilets are available. The Foundation for Environmental Education has the beach of Cala sa Nau with the Blue Flag , the symbol for sustainable tourism , excellent.

Access

Access to the bay is possible via a narrow road about two kilometers long. There is a small paid parking lot directly above the beach. The way down to the beach is via paved stairs. It is also possible to take a boat into the bay and anchor in front of the beach.

The entire bay is a very good snorkelling and diving area . Snorkeling and diving are possible from the beach, but the places further in the bay can only be reached comfortably by boat. The maximum depth in the bay is about 10 meters, at the entrance to the bay the water depth is about 20 meters. On the southern side there is a cave that is easy to dive, the Mariengrotte . It is about 80 meters deep and about 40 meters wide. The depth of the water in the cave is between three and eight meters. The cave is one big room, the exit is always visible. On the ceiling in the central area there is an approximately 1 meter high air bubble into which you can emerge.

The cave system was created by karstification of the limestone during times of lower sea levels (see Eustasia ). During these times, stalactites were created in the large cave area , which can still be seen today.
