The Es Murterar power plant ( Spanish Central Térmica de Es Murterar ) is a combined coal-oil power plant on the Balearic island of Mallorca .

The combined cycle power plant is located on the northeast coast of the island in the municipality of Alcúdia in the industrial area Polígono Industrial Es Murterar . The six installed generator units currently have a total output of 575 MW.

description

After the decommissioning of the Alcudia I coal-fired power plant built by Gas y Electricidad SA (GESA) in the port of Port d'Alcúdia in the 1950s, the first group with a capacity of 125 MW went online in 1981 at the newly built site. A second 125 MW group, also powered by coal, began operations in 1984 and the old power plant was shut down. In 1997, two more coal-fired units went online, each with 130 MW.

The two gas turbines with 37.5 MW each (net: 32.7 MW), which run on diesel fuel , have been in operation as a peak load group since 1989. Overall, the power plant has an electrical output of 575 MW (approx. 535 MW net).

In 2018 it was decided to shut down part of the power plant. The two oldest of the four coal-fired units were finally shut down on December 30, 2019. The power plant's operating time is limited to 1,500 hours per year until August 2021, after which 500 hours of operating time per year are allowed until the final shutdown. The power plant is de facto completely shut down and is only available as a reserve. The loss of electricity production is compensated for by the two gas-fired power plants Son Reus and Cas Tresorer as well as electricity imports from mainland Spain via the Romulo HVDC line . A final shutdown of the power plant will only take place when a second transmission cable connects the island with the mainland.

The system only has one large chimney that emits the exhaust gases from all blocks together. The power plant is cooled with the help of sea water, which is why there is no need for a cooling tower. The system is equipped with dry flue gas desulphurisation and has been certified according to ISO 14001 by AENOR since 1996 . The operator of the power plant is the Spanish energy company Endesa .

Recycling of residues

Some of the ash resulting from the burning of coal is reused in the manufacture of cement in Inca and Lloseta . The remaining ash deposition of the power plant are in the specially created landfill Biniatria 39 ° 48 '44 "  N , 3 ° 4' 54"  O placed in close proximity to the power plant.

Mains connection

The backbone of the electricity supply in Mallorca is the 220 kV high voltage network . The 220 kV / 69 kV substation operated by the national transmission system operator Red Eléctrica de España , to which the power plant is connected, is located on the power plant site.
