The HVDC Romulo is a high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line through the Balearic Sea between the Balearic Islands and mainland Spain . The end points of the line are in Santa Ponsa ( HVDC converter station Santa Ponça ) on Mallorca and Morvedre near Valencia . At times, the line was also COMETA (short for Co Nexion Me diterránea T ransporte A lta tensión , HVDC Iberian Peninsula Balearic called).

The line was put into operation in August 2012 as a bipolar line with a transmission capacity of 400 MW at ± 250 kV and is intended to secure the electricity supply in the Balearic Islands. The line is approx. 244 km long, of which approx. 237 km are designed as submarine cables , and runs at a maximum depth of 1,485 m. At the time of commissioning, this depth was only exceeded by the SAPEI between Italy and Sardinia . The cable systems were supplied by Nexans and Prysmian , the converter stations by Siemens. The total investment was 420 million euros.
