HVDC converter station Santa Ponça

The HVDC converter station Santa Ponça ( converter station ) is a high-voltage direct current transmission system (HVDC system) connected to the Spanish mainland network on the Balearic island of Mallorca .

The system with the 244 kilometer long HVDC submarine cable COMETA between Sagunto (HVDC Morvedre station) (Valencia) and Santa Ponça with an operating voltage of 250  kV transmits around 400 MW and serves to cover peak loads . The power is only transmitted in one direction.

The HVDC line built by the Spanish transmission system operator Red Eléctrica , which connects the Spanish mainland and Mallorca, is the first HVDC project on Spanish soil. A second submarine cable is being planned.

The converter station in the Son Bugadelles industrial area was regularly connected to the grid in 2013 after trial operation in 2011 and can currently supply a maximum of 25% of the energy required on Mallorca. To date, Mallorca has been supplied with energy exclusively from its own power plants on Mallorca and Menorca. The new power supply from the mainland is intended to support and stabilize the energy needs of Mallorca and Menorca so that supply bottlenecks can be avoided.

Siemens supplied the two converter stations for the transmission system. The operator is the national transmission system operator Red Eléctrica de España .
