Santa Ponça (in German and English often also the Castilian name: Santa Ponsa ) is a place in the southwest of the Balearic island of Mallorca . It belongs to the municipality of Calvià . The distance to the island's capital Palma is around 20 kilometers. Santa Ponça has 10,967 inhabitants (as of 2019).

Location description

Santa Ponça is grouped around an elongated bay surrounded by steep rock walls. The sandy beach, which is smaller compared to the neighboring town of Peguera and is traversed by a channel, is located at the front of the bay. A small green area is attached. Separated from a moderately busy embankment road, restaurants, cafés and souvenir shops stretch along the beach zone. Voluminous, five- and six-story middle-class hotels with uniform furnishings dominate the north bank and the central area.

Santa Ponça became famous in the summer of 2010 when Daniela Katzenberger opened the café of the same name, accompanied by TV . In the 2011 season, Jürgen Drews' bistro called “The King of Mallorca” opened near the “Café Katzenberger ”. The "Café Katzenberger" has been permanently closed since the beginning of 2017.

A picturesque marina is just a few minutes' walk from the center. The villa districts of wealthy foreigners and Spaniards stretch along the north and south banks. Numerous Germans have settled here. There was a German school, but it was closed in 2011. The English school “Baleares International College” in the neighboring town of Magaluf is currently in the catchment area of Santa Ponça . There is a small German cultural center. Behind the hotel front on the north coast there is the much smaller tourist center “The Square”, which is very popular with the British and Irish. There are three golf courses in the surrounding area, as well as the port of Port Adriano, which was built in 2009 and is close to the municipality of El Toro .

history

In the vicinity of the village, in the Puig de sa Morisca Archaeological Park , there are the remains of a Talaiot culture settlement , some of which have been excavated and restored. It was from around 1200 BC. Inhabited until the Christian reconquest in the 13th century AD. On September 10, 1229 Jaume I of Aragón landed with a force near the present-day marina and thus initiated the recapture of the island from the Muslim Moors . A pillar was erected at this point as a memorial. Today, on the first weekend in September, the landing battles are re-enacted.
