Magaluf is a place (or a tourist urbanization ) on the Balearic island of Mallorca . It is located at the western end of the Bay of Palma and belongs to the municipality of Calvià . As in S'Arenal , numerous hotels have been built here to accommodate the tourists. The silhouette of the place is determined even more by the row of skyscrapers than on the Platja de Palma . While S'Arenal is more likely to be visited by German tourists, Magaluf is a preferred travel destination for vacationers from Great Britain. Accordingly, English pubs , fish-and-chip , bingo and billiards booths dominate the streetscape.

The sandy beach of Magaluf is 1,600 meters long, making it one of the longest in the Calvià district. The tourist office counted 1,360 loungers and 790 parasols. In the bay of Magaluf there is a small island that is now under nature protection ( Isla de sa Porrassa ).

Surname

The earliest best known mention of Magaluf comes from a document from the year 1501. The meaning is controversial, the best-known attempts to explain it relate to Hebrew and Arabic. The derivation from Hebrew refers to the Hebrew maẖlif Hebrew מַחֲלִיף Substitute man who changed from Arabic to Arabic maʾa ḥallūf ( Arabic ماء حلّوف, DMG ma'a ḥallūf , ma'a 'water', ḥallūf , Maġribin Arabic 'pig').

nightlife

Magaluf's party mile is called Punta Ballena. Many bars and night clubs exist in Magaluf. The biggest nightclub is the BCM Planet Dance , where numerous well-known DJs played. It extends over 2 floors, with the basement used for foam, popcorn and water parties. Further offers of the entertainment industry are Aquapark , Marineland or Dorado City . By 2007, there was a real submarine called the Nemo that tourists could use for diving trips.

COVID-19 pandemic

After the start of the COVID-19 pandemic , bars, pubs, restaurants and other nightlife venues were closed across Europe . In Spain around 30,000 people (plus the number of unreported cases ) had died in mid-2020 (see COVID-19 pandemic in Spain ); in Europe only the UK has more deaths . After a far-reaching lockdown in Spain (including the Spanish islands ), tourism has been allowed again since June 2020. In July there were nightly drinking bouts again in some places, during which the participants violated distance rules and hygiene regulations. This attracted attention across Europe - also against the background that après-ski parties in Ischgl at the beginning of 2020 were a hotspot from which returning tourists dragged the COVID-19 virus to their home countries and caused corona outbreaks there . Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas called the behavior dangerous and "inconsiderate towards everyone who wants to spend their vacation in safety". Mallorca's regional government closed all bars in the party centers (the 'Punta Ballena' as well as “Bierstraße” and “Schinkenstraße” at Ballermann 6 ) for two months in mid-July .
