The Aeropuerto de Alicante-Elche or Aeropuerto El Altet is an international airport in the Spanish province of Alicante , Valencia region in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula . The airport is located southwest of Alicante near El Altet (municipality of Elche ) and is therefore also called Aeropuerto El Altet . With around 14 million passengers in 2018, it was the fifth largest airport in Spain.

Location and transport links

The airport is located around nine kilometers southwest of Alicante near the national road N 332 (Carretera Cartagena-Alicante-Valencia) and is subject to toll from all coastal towns via the Autovia del Mediterráneo A-7 (from the north, alternatively to Alicante coastal motorway Autopista AP-7 (toll road) ) and Autovía A-70 ) within easy reach.

Public transport : approx. Every 40 minutes there are buses to Alicante or Benidorm (journey time approx. 45 minutes). The Estación de Renfe - Torrellano train station is also in the immediate vicinity of the airport . From here there are trains to Alicante (north) and Murcia (south) every hour. The new bus line C-6 has recently been launched and runs to Alicante every 20 minutes. The travel time should be 30 minutes.

Its location on the Costa Blanca makes the airport one of the most important destinations for flights to Spain . In the passenger statistics of all Spanish airports, it ranks fifth after Madrid-Barajas , Barcelona-El Prat , Palma de Mallorca and Málaga . In 2018, 14 million passengers were handled.

Most of the passengers came from Great Britain, followed by Spaniards and Germans, Norwegians, Dutch, Belgians and Swedes. The specialist magazine "anna.aero" has awarded Alicante-Elche Airport as the European airport with the most new airlines in 2016. Alicante-Elche Airport is the province's top-selling company and creates the most direct and indirect jobs.

Terminals

The airport currently consists of two terminals. The Nueva Área Terminal (NAT) was opened on March 24, 2011 after years of construction and will initially take on all passenger traffic, i. H. the old Terminals 1 and 2 are closed, but available for a possible reopening. The extension of the old Terminal 1, inaugurated in March 2007, was built for low-cost airlines as the extension has no passenger boarding bridges, but only two simple staircases to the apron.

criticism

The local press criticizes the fact that Alicante-Elche airport is the only airport of this size in Europe that has no rail connection. The EU recommends a connection to the railroad for 6 million passengers or more.

Old airport

The new airport was opened in March 2011 and built right next to the old airport, which now serves primarily as a parking lot for the vehicles of the airport staff. While numerous local car rental companies had a stand in the parking lot at the old airport, this is no longer the case at the new airport. Only the major international car rental companies are now represented here. The local car rental companies have settled in the immediate vicinity of the airport in the Torrelano district and offer driving and pick-up services via the Internet.
