The La Gomera Airport ( Spanish Aeropuerto de La Gomera ; IATA Code : GMZ , ICAO code : GCGM ) is the airport of to Spain belonging Canary Island of La Gomera . Located in the municipality of Alajeró , it is twelve kilometers (as the crow flies ) from the island's capital, San Sebastián de La Gomera . The shortest road connection, however, is 33 kilometers long.
history
In the 1950s, the private airport El Revolcadero was built on La Gomera . It was located south of Alajero at an altitude of 170 meters above sea level and only 300 meters from the coast, had a runway with the direction 09-27. It was released on July 15, 1959 for the private air traffic of its owner and used as an emergency airfield and as a base for pest control. In 1962, because of the problematic medical care on the island, the possibility of building a new airport was considered. It stayed that way for a long time. Since there was a new high-speed ferry in the 1970s and Tenerife South Airport began its service, the project was finally abandoned.
On July 27, 1987, an agreement was signed between Spain and the government of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, which made it possible to build an airport. The rather impassable and mountainous island and the protection of the Garajonay National Park made it difficult to find a suitable airport area. The project development and the determination of the location on a plateau in the island community of Alajeró , two kilometers from the old El Revolcadero airport, lasted until the end of 1990. Four years later, work on the runway and the apron was completed. In April 1995 the operating company AENA S.A. completed the construction work. The construction contract for the terminal, which was inaugurated in 1999, was awarded. The architecture of the two-story airport building has typical Canarian features. The main entrance is a replica of the door of the Asunción Church , which is located in the island's capital, San Sebastián .
Opened in June 1999, La Gomera airport is the youngest in the Canary Islands.
Airlines and Destinations
The airport operates domestic flights mainly to the neighboring island of Tenerife ; mostly handled by the regional airlines Binter Canarias . The routes are unprofitable and only maintained due to political pressure.
The runway is too short for international flights, so travelers mostly land on Tenerife. Most tourists arrive at Tenerife's southern airport , but the flight connection to La Gomera is handled via Tenerife's northern airport . It is therefore closer, cheaper and usually quicker to get to La Gomera via the port of Los Cristianos by ferry or fast ferry.
