Alajeró is one of the six municipalities on the Canary Island of La Gomera . The town of Alajeró, which is also the administrative center, is located high in the mountains above the town of Playa Santiago , which is partly part of the municipality of Alajeró and San Sebastián de La Gomera .
history
The municipality of Alajeró is located in the part of the historical indigenous areas Hipalán and Orone .
The founding of the larger town of Playa Santiago can be traced back to fishermen who settled there due to the good fishing opportunities and built fish canning factories there as well as buildings to repair the ships.
economy
In winter, the community is often in the cloud fog. The residents took advantage of this in the past by sowing grain and legumes with the first rains in November, which were then harvested in May. Commercial agriculture has since been practically abandoned. Since an agricultural crisis in the 1960s and 1970s, rural exodus began, so that the smaller villages are partly completely deserted and a lot of land lies fallow. The fish factory in Playa Santiago also had to be closed.
Today, moderate tourism brings a little prosperity , also thanks to the small island airport opened in 1999 .
