Benchijigua is a small town on the Canary Island of La Gomera in the municipality of San Sebastian . About 12 kilometers north of Playa Santiago , the place is in the middle of the Barranco de Benchijigua at the foot of the Roque de Agando at an altitude of about 600  m . Benchijigua was one of the first places to be established on the island. Today there is a renovated model housing estate subsidized by the European Union , which has now fallen into disrepair and abandoned. Also the ferry company Fred. Olsen had some fincas restored in the old Canarian style and named one of his fast ferries the Benchijigua Express . This runs between Los Cristianos and San Sebastián de la Gomera , among others .
