history

Today's place emerged from a small fishing village in the 1970s. The place was first mentioned in the 16th century when the existence of a port is reported. The first permanent buildings were erected in 1860. In 1924 a chapel was built for the growing population in Los Cristianos. In the 1960s, due to the favorable climatic conditions in the south of Tenerife, several nursing homes for lung diseases and rehabilitation had settled, with which the tourist development of Los Cristianos began. The Plan Insular 1972 developed an urban planning concept for the south of the island in order to develop it for tourism . Passenger ferries have also been operating in the port of Los Cristianos since 1975. In addition, the TF-1 southern motorway and Tenerife South Airport were built. In 1987 the old chapel was demolished to build a larger church.

traffic

Los Cristianos is located on the Autopista del Sur , which leads from Santiago del Teide past Los Cristianos to La Laguna and Santa Cruz . To the east of the town is Tenerife South Airport . In the long term, Los Cristianos is to get a railway connection to Santa Cruz via the Tren del Sur . The place also has a ferry port with Puerto de Los Cristianos , which enables connections to San Sebastián de La Gomera and Valle Gran Rey on La Gomera , Santa Cruz de La Palma on La Palma and to Puerto de La Estaca on El Hierro . The ferry port counted 1,661,578 passengers in 2008.
