Puerto de La Estaca

The Puerto de La Estaca is the largest port on the Canary Island of El Hierro and is located in the municipality of Valverde . It is managed by the Port Authority based in Santa Cruz de Tenerife .

Surname

The name of the island harbor has its origins in the time when sailing boats still had to be moored to an iron rod attached to the rock, Spanish estaca .

geography

The port is located on the east coast of El Hierro, about seven kilometers from the island's capital Valverde and is connected to it by the HI-2 road. Together with a few adjacent houses, the port forms a small town of the same name with 85 inhabitants (as of 2017). There is also a small beach near the port.

history

For a long time, Puerto de La Estaca was the island's only connection to the rest of the world, until El Hierro Airport opened in 1972 . It was not until 1960 that ships were able to dock directly in the port as part of an expansion of the port that began in 1948.

After the island was headed for by a post ship every week until 1960, three ships have been sailing since then connecting El Hierro with La Palma , La Gomera and Tenerife .

From 2002 to the end of 2005, the port and the access road were expanded and renewed for 30 million euros.

There have been regular ferry connections to Los Cristianos on Tenerife since the 1990s . After the connection was operated by Trasmediterránea from 2001 to 2014 , catamarans from the shipping company Naviera Armas have been operating since then .
