The Naviera Armas is a Spanish shipping company based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria . It operates several routes between the Canary Islands with its own ships . There is also a ferry connection on Cape Verde between Mindelo and Porto Novo .

history

The shipping company was founded in 1941 by Antonio Armas Curbelo for the transport of goods, with salt transports playing an important role at the time. His son, Antonio Armas Fernandez succeeded him as managing director. It all started with wooden sailing ships , which were later also motorized. Passengers were later also carried. At the beginning of 2019, Naviera Armas had 13  RoPax ferries with capacities for cars, trucks and passengers.

Until 2012 there was also a connection from the Canary Islands to Madeira. Further former connections led to Portimão in Portugal , to Morocco (2008) and from Gran Canaria to the western Saharan city of El Aaiún (2010).

Incidents

On April 30, 2008, the Ropax ferry Assalama , built in 1967 and carrying 113 passengers, ran aground off the coast of Morocco. All passengers and crew could be saved.

On April 22, 2017, the Volcan de Tamasite ferry , which was on its way from Tenerife to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, rammed the Las Palmas pier. 13 people were slightly injured on the ship and a fuel line in the pier was damaged, causing about 60,000 liters of diesel to leak. The ship was then brought to the port by tugs, where the passengers could disembark. The cause of the accident appears to have been a power failure on the ship, which led to the inability to maneuver.
