The Volcán de Taburiente is a ferry operated by the Armas shipping company and entered service in 2006 for regular services between the Canary Islands .

commitment

It was built by the Spanish shipyard Hijos de J. Barreras in Vigo and runs from Los Cristianos on Tenerife to the ports of San Sebastián de La Gomera and Santa Cruz de La Palma .

technology

The Volcan de Taburiente is twelve meters shorter than her sister ships Volcan de Tamasite and Volcan de Timanfaya . The passenger capacity is 1500 people. With decks 3 and 5, the ship has two complete cargo decks as well as a car deck for cars. With this arrangement 103 cars and 28 trailers can be transported or up to a maximum of 305 cars. The service speed is 22.5 knots.

Machine system and drive

The machine system consists of four four-stroke, nine-cylinder diesel in-line engines of the MaK 9M32C type from Caterpillar . The nominal power per motor is 4,500  kW at a speed of 600 rpm. The two controllable pitch propellers with a diameter of 3.7 meters are each driven by two motors. A cross-thruster control system with 2 × 720 kW is available for maneuverability in the sometimes very cramped port facilities . Two generators driven by the main engines and two diesel units from Wärtsilä , each with around 900 kW (1125 kVA), feed into the electrical system. The emergency power generator has an output of 277 kW (346 kVA).

Furnishing

Because of the short crossing times, there are no passenger cabins. Cabins are only available for the 34-person crew.
