The Volcan de Tamasite is a ferry operated by the Naviera Armas shipping company .

history

The ship was built by J. Barreas in Vigo under construction number 1625 and put into service in 2004. Since its commissioning, the ship has been sailing for the Naviera Armas , which mainly operates ferry connections to and between the Spanish Atlantic islands.

Ship bow after the collision

On April 22nd, 2017, shortly after casting off in Las Palmas (destination Tenerife), the ferry hit the front of the pier of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria . According to the shipping company, the cause was a two-minute power failure with subsequent failure of the main engines; the attempt to stop the ship with the starboard anchor failed. 13 of the 140 passengers on board were slightly injured in the collision. Around 60,000 liters of diesel leaked from a damaged fuel line in the pier . The resulting oil spill was several kilometers long and was contained and dismantled by units of the Salvamento Maritimo , including the Miguel de Cervantes emergency tug equipped with oil control systems . It is estimated that the damage to the pier is around 2 million euros.

description

It is propelled by two eight-stroke marine diesel engines from the manufacturer Wärtsilä , each with 8400  kW output , which act on two controllable pitch propellers with a diameter of 4.2 m each and enable a maximum speed of 22  knots . The ship is equipped with two bow thrusters , each with an output of 1,000 kW.

Two generators , each with an output of 1,100 kW, and an emergency generator with an output of 270 kW are available for generating electricity on board .

The ship is equipped with three vehicle decks, one of which is a car deck that is accessible via ramps. The vehicles are loaded and unloaded via two stern ramps , there is no front hatch . The stern ramps are 16 m long and 8 m wide. The vehicle decks are connected to one another with ramps. The car deck is adjustable in height. The ship has a capacity of 1,500 people and can carry 300 cars on a total of 1,350 lane meters .

The Volcan de Tamasite has a sister ship with the Volcan de Timanfaya .
