Playa Blanca ( German: white beach ), once a fishing village, is now a tourist center in the south of to Spain belonging Canary Island of Lanzarote . In 2011, 11,301 people lived in the village belonging to the municipality of Yaiza .
character
At first, attempts were made to maintain the village character despite the many tourist facilities. These tourist buildings are often self-contained facilities that try to form a community based on the pueblo principle. What can often be seen, however, is the constant sequence of standard buildings as a result of property speculation according to the laws of mass tourism.
Playa Blanca has a coastal promenade that offers a view of both the island itself and the neighboring island of Fuerteventura . There you will find numerous restaurants and bars as well as several shops. The promenade runs through the Marina Rubicon, among other places. More restaurants and leisure facilities can be found here.
From the port there are daily ferry connections from the shipping company Fred. Olsen Express and Naviera Armas to Corralejo on the neighboring island of Fuerteventura . The crossing takes about half an hour.
Three kilometers west of Playa Blanca you pass the 194 meter high red ash volcano Montaña Roja , which a hiking trail leads up to, to finally reach the old fishing lighthouse Faro de Punta Pechiguera , built in 1936 . This marks the most south-westerly point of Lanzarote. In 1986, a new, higher lighthouse was built right next to it. The extinct volcano has an area of around 1.5 square kilometers. The edges of the mountain are more than half built with residential complexes.
To the northeast of the town are the Papagayo Beaches and the Rubicón Plain, which was important during the conquest of the island in the early 15th century.
