Corralejo [ koralexo ] is a place on the northern tip on to Spain belonging Canary Island Fuerteventura . It is located there in the municipality of La Oliva about 40 kilometers north of the international airport .

history

Located across from Lobos Island, Corralejo was a pirate and smuggler port in the 17th century . Taxes and duties on the import of food (goats, grain, cheese) were evaded by smuggling . The island government was then in Betancuria, far enough to be powerless against this business.

From the 1950s onwards there were land sales to foreign tourism companies (Belgians, Dutch and Germans), which resulted in apartment complexes and hotels.

In the mid-1970s, two large hotel buildings ( RIU Tres Islas and Riu Oliva Beach ) were built south of Corralejo in the middle of the Parque Natural de Corralejo dune area . After the rededication to a nature park, no further hotel complexes were allowed to be built south of the local development.

Today Corralejo is primarily a tourist destination, also benefited by regular ferry connections to the neighboring island of Lanzarote , about eight kilometers away . The tourism industry of the northern part of the island is increasingly concentrated here.

region

To the south of Corralejo, the national park's dune area extends for about eleven kilometers. On the lake side, the dunes border on smaller and also long beaches with fine white sand. The beaches of Corralejo usually end in the sea with a stony bottom. There are some well-preserved volcanic craters in the southwest of the village. The Volcanes de Bayuyo , which also includes the Calderón Hondo , are accessible via a partially paved hiking trail.

economy

The main industry today is tourism (e.g. hotels, apartment complexes, restaurants, travel companies), which continues to grow. Agriculture is of minor importance and consists mainly of goat farming and cheese making.
