RIU Hotels & Resorts (RIUSA II, SA or Riu for short) is a Spanish hotel chain based on Platja de Palma on Mallorca in Spain . In 2005 the chain, consisting of 109 hotels with 71,000 beds and 17,000 employees, had a turnover of one billion euros .

The managing partners are Luis Riu Güell and Carmen Riu Güell, the founder's grandchildren. The travel group TUI has held the majority of the shares in Riu since 1976 . Riu, in turn, has held shares in TUI since 2004 (8% in March 2014). In March 2019, RIU bought 1.1 million TUI shares and now holds a total of 3.56% of the travel company's shares.

Riu was founded in 1953 as a small family business by Don Juan Riu, the first hotel was the San Francisco on Mallorca. The original hotel has since been demolished and rebuilt on the same spot in Playa de Palma.

In the 1960s, more hotels were built on Mallorca. The company expanded in the 1980s. First hotels were built in the Canary Islands . After this expansion was successful, the first hotel outside of Spain was built in the Dominican Republic in the 1990s . Within a few years, more hotels were built on other Caribbean islands and in Florida . Today there are hotels in 17 countries.
