The Pechiguera Lighthouse is a lighthouse on to Spain belonging Canary Island of Lanzarote .
History and technology
The lighthouse is located on the southwestern tip of Lanzarote, in the municipality of Yaiza on the La Bocayna strait , which separates Lanzarote from its neighboring island of Fuerteventura .
Old lighthouse
The old, cylindrical tower was inaugurated in 1866 and in operation for around 120 years. It was built from volcanic basalt rock and reaches a height of ten meters. The design comes from the Gran Canaria- born engineer Juan Leòn y Castillo (1834–1912) and Clavijo y Pou . The white beacon had a range of twelve nautical miles and was 16.5 meters above sea level. The rectangular building, which serves as the base of the old tower, housed the lighthouse keeper's apartment with three rooms, a bathroom, kitchen and office.
The Canary Islands government declared the old lighthouse on December 20, 2002 a cultural asset of special interest ( Bien de Interés Cultural ) .
New lighthouse
In 1986 the new, cylindrical and 50 meter high lighthouse was built right next to the old one. Its white beacon has a range of 17 nautical miles and a fire height of 54 meters above sea level.
In 2009 the new tower was renovated and repainted.
