La Bocayna or La Bocaina ( Spanish Estrecho de la Bocaina ) is a strait in the Canary Islands . It separates Lanzarote from Fuerteventura .

geography

In the north of La Bocayna is Lanzarote with the holiday resorts in and around Playa Blanca . The Rubicón coast and the Papagayo beaches form the southern cape ( Punta in Spanish ) of the island. In the south lies the rocky coast of Fuerteventura with Corralejo and the island of Lobos . Between Punta Papagayo and Punta Martiño on Lobos the strait is 8.6 kilometers wide and up to 30 m deep .

traffic

Between the ports of Playa Blanca and Corralejo the RoRo ferries commute Volcán de Tindaya and Bocayna Express in regular service . Both harbors are also home to small fishing vessels, excursion boats and pleasure craft. Marina Rubicón was opened in 2003 just under two kilometers east of the port of Playa Blanca .

For terrestrial navigation , La Bocayna has three lighthouses ( Faro in Spanish ): Faro de Punta Pechiguera on Lanzarote, Faro de Tostón on Fuerteventura and Faro de Martiño on Lobos.

Travesía La Bocaina

Travesía La Bocaina is an annual open water swim from Playa Blanca to Corralejo. Depending on the speed of the swimmer, crossing the 15 km long route takes between five and eight hours.
