GDR indoor athletics championships 1984
The GDR indoor athletics championships were held for the 21st time in 1984 . From January 21st to 22nd the champions were determined in the Senftenberger Sporthalle Aktivist in 28 disciplines (16 men / 12 women).
For the men, three athletes ( Wagenknecht (800 m), Munkelt (60 m hurdles), Weigel (10 km walking)), and for the women two athletes ( Martins (3000 m) and Daute (wide)) won their title to defend the previous year. With seven titles, SC Dynamo Berlin was the most successful team in these championships. The Leipzig hurdler Thomas Munkelt celebrated his tenth indoor title .
The sporting highlight of the first day was provided by 19-year-old Heike Daute with the new indoor world record in the long jump of 6.99 m, and the next day 21-year-old Thomas Schröder when he set the indoor world record of 9.50 s over 100 yards from Sören Schlegel equalized.
Already on January 6th and 7th, the all -around fighters Torsten Voss and Sabine Paetz set new GDR indoor best performances.
