Hansjörg Kunze (born December 28, 1959 in Rostock ) is a former German athlete and Olympic medalist who was successful in long-distance running for the GDR .

Life

Hansjörg Kunze had a competition weight of 63 kg with a height of 1.79 m. His greatest success was the bronze medal in the 5000 meter run at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul , for which he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze. He started for the SC Empor Rostock .

He achieved a spectacular victory in Rieti ( Italy ) on September 9, 1981 , when he set a European record in the 5000 meter run with 13: 10.40 minutes and defeated the Kenyan Henry Rono , who dominated this season, in this competition . His long-term athletic rival in the GDR was Werner Schildhauer from Halle (Saale) .

Kunze has been a journalist since the end of his sporting career. Among other things, he worked in a PR agency for a sports shoe manufacturer, as a reporter for the World Athletics Championships in Stuttgart in 1993 , as a radio and television reporter for a regional broadcaster and most recently as the press spokesman for the shipping company AIDA Cruises . In 2004 he was involved in the Olympic application of the Hanseatic city of Rostock (for the sailing competitions with the main venue Leipzig).

Hansjörg Kunze has been married since 1981 and has two children.
