Ronald Weigel

Ronald Weigel (born August 8, 1959 in Hildburghausen ) is a former German athlete and current trainer .

Career

Ronald Weigel began as a student in his home town of Hildburghausen with athletics and was discovered as a walking talent . In 1973 he was GDR student champion, in 1977 he was runner-up at the European Junior Championships. Weigel started for the ASK Vorwärts Potsdam and was a captain of the NVA as a member of the army sports club . After the fall of the Wall , he voluntarily declared his previous collaboration with the East German Ministry for State Security . He was then dismissed from the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr without notice and trained under Hans-Joachim Pathus at OSC Potsdam and LAC Halensee Berlin . When he competed, he was 1.77 m tall and weighed 62 kg.

In 1997 Ronald Weigel took a job as the Australian national coach in Canberra . The Australian Nathan Deakes trained by him won the bronze medal in the 20 km walk at the 2004 Olympic Games . In 2002 Ronald Weigel returned to Germany and took over the vacant position of national walker coach from his former coach Hans-Joachim Pathus. His previous work for the State Security of the GDR was checked, but was not viewed as a cause for objection. Since mid-2010 he has also been taking care of the marathon runners as national coach.

successes

His first major success was winning the title at the 1983 World Championships in 50 km walking . The 1984 Olympic Games escaped him because of the boycott of the GDR. At the 1987 World Championships he was runner-up in the 50 km walk, as well as a year later at the Olympic Games in Seoul in the 20 km walk and in the 50 km walk. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , Weigel took bronze again in the 50 km walk. This makes him the only German athlete to have won medals in both walking disciplines at the Olympic Games.

On June 23, 1993, he received the Silver Laurel Leaf for his sporting achievements.

Overview of successes

At the European Championships in 1986 he was disqualified in walking 50 km. At the World Championships in 1991 and 1993 he gave up, in 1995 he was disqualified.
