Valentin Kononen
Valentin Kononen (born March 7, 1969 in Helsinki ) is a former Finnish athlete . With a height of 1.81 m, his competition weight was 69 kg.
Valentin Kononen was a specialist in 50 km walking . He reached his first front placement at the European Championships in 1990 with sixth place. In 1993 at the World Championships, he won silver 21 seconds behind the Spaniard Jesús Ángel García .
At the European Championships in his hometown of Helsinki in 1994 he was in the top group for a long time, but then fell back exhausted and, to his great disappointment, only finished seventh.
In 1995 at the World Championships in Gothenburg he won his most important title one and a half minutes ahead of the Italian Giovanni Perricelli . Kononen won his last medal at major championships in 1998 when he won silver at the European Championships, half a minute behind Poland's Robert Korzeniowski .
Valentin Kononen set his best time of 3:39:34 h on March 25, 2000 in Dudince.
