The GDR indoor athletics championships were held for the 25th time in 1988 and took place from February 26th to 27th in the Senftenberg sports hall Aktivist , in which the champions were determined in 29 disciplines (16 men / 13 women).

In the men’s category, six athletes ( Bringmann (100 yards), Oschkenat (60 m hurdles), Weigel (walking), Pietz (rod), Beer (wide) and Timmermann (ball)) managed to defend their title from the previous year in the women three athletes ( Wachtel (800 m), Oschkenat (60 m hurdles) and Drechsler (wide)) succeeded. With eight titles, SC Dynamo Berlin was the most successful team at the championships.

Beate Anders provided the sporting highlight with the new GDR indoor record in the 5 km walk.

On February 2nd, the all- around fighter Anke Behmer set a new indoor world record in the pentathlon.
