GDR indoor athletics championships 1979

The GDR indoor athletics championships were held for the 16th time in 1979 and took place from February 17th to 18th in the Senftenberg sports hall Aktivist , in which the champions were determined in 25 disciplines (15 men / 10 women).

In the men’s category, four athletes ( Straub (1500 m), Munkelt (60 m hurdles), Krumpolt (rod) and Schmidt (ball)) managed to defend their title from the previous year, which in the women’s one athlete ( Koch (100 yard )) succeeded. With five championship titles, SC Cottbus was the most successful team in these championships.

Marita Koch provided the sporting highlight with the new indoor world record of 10.33 s over 100 yards. Frank Richter (400 m) and Ronald Weigel (20,000 m walking) set new GDR indoor best performances in the title fights.
