Detlef Wagenknecht (born January 3, 1959 in Berlin ) is a former German athlete who - starting for the GDR - was 1980 Olympic sixth in the 800-meter run .

Wagenknecht took second place over 800 meters at the Junior European Championships in 1977, with the 4 x 400 meter relay he was Junior European Champion. His first participation in a major competition in the adult class he completed at the European Championships in Prague in 1978 , he was eliminated in the interim. He reached his first big final at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , in 1: 47.0 min he finished sixth, one second behind bronze. At the European Indoor Championships in Grenoble in 1981 , he finished fifth in 1: 48.87 minutes, 1.17 seconds behind the winner, Herbert Wursthorn . In 1981 Wagenknecht finished third at the Athletics World Cup . In 1982, at the European Championships in Athens, Hans-Peter Ferner won, as in 1981 in Grenoble, a strong outsider from the Federal Republic of Germany. Wagenknecht finished sixth in 1: 47.06 minutes, 0.16 seconds behind bronze. At the first World Championships in Helsinki in 1983 , Wagenknecht was eliminated in the intermediate run. In 1985 Wagenknecht finished fourth in the World Cup.

Detlef Wagenknecht was East German champion in the 800-meter run in 1978, 1980, 1982, 1983 and 1984. In 1979 and 1981 he was second behind Olaf Beyer . Wagenknecht won the championship in the hall in 1983 and 1984. In 1982 he improved the GDR record over 1000 meters. In 1983 he ran the GDR record in 1: 15.68 minutes on the rarely run 600-meter distance.

Wagenknecht started for SC Dynamo Berlin and was trained by Jürgen Haase . During his competition time he was 1.93 m tall and weighed 74 kg.
