Rainer Wachenbrunner (born January 11, 1962 in Geba ) is a former German long-distance runner .

In 1988 he became the GDR marathon champion in Eisenhüttenstadt . He set his best time over this distance with 2:12:02 h as eighth of the London Marathon 1990; This puts it in 14th place in the all-time German best list (as of May 2007).

He also won national championship titles in reunified Germany: 1991 in the 25 km road run, 1993 in the 5000 meter run , 1992 and 1999 in cross country running on the long distance and 1998 in cross country running on the short distance. He also won the Hanover Marathon in 1995 and the Baden Marathon in 1998 on the half-marathon distance.

In various road running distances he is at the top of the all-time German leaderboards. His winning time at the 25 km from Berlin in 1992 (1:15:21 h) is the fastest of a German on a precisely measured route. He is the fourth fastest German so far both over 10 km (28:38 min) and in the half marathon (1:01:50 h as third in the Berlin Half Marathon 1992).

In 1993 he was ninth at the World Half Marathon Championships. At the marathon of the World Athletics Championships in Gothenburg in 1995, which started in the midday heat , he gave up after 25 kilometers.
