25 km from Berlin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 25 km from Berlin (official name since 2017 S 25 Berlin ) are a people's and street run in Berlin that has been held since 1981 at the beginning of May .

description

The route starts at the Olympischen Platz, leads in the form of an eight across the Straße des 17. Juni, past the Victory Column , through the Brandenburg Gate and across Potsdamer Platz , Kurfürstendamm , Kantstraße and Reichsstraße back to the Olympiastadion , where the finish is located .

The run was originally organized by the French occupiers of West Berlin and is therefore still known colloquially as the French run . Since the Berlin Marathon was only moved to the city center in autumn 1981, the 25 km de Berlin was the first city run in Berlin.

Since 1991, the run has been continued by the Berlin Athletics Association (BLV), which passed responsibility on to Gerhard Janetzky (managing partner of the ISTAF ) and Christoph Kopp (former FSVO president) in 2007 .

Over the years, depending on the main sponsor, the name has been changed again and again. Among other things, the event operated under the name BIG 25 Berlin until 2017 , and from the end of 2007 to 2008 BERLIN RUNS… 25 km, previously Run Berlin. With the entry of Berliner Sparkasse , the official name has been S 25 Berlin since September 2017 .

Inline skating competition

The discipline of inline skating first became part of the 25 km from Berlin in 2000 . On April 30th, 15 minutes before the main run, the inline skaters started on a half marathon course with start and finish on the Olympic Square.

Despite the three-digit increase in participants in the first few years, the numbers fell from 2004 onwards. This was due to organizational problems with the necessary requirements for this sport. The start could not be started on the Olympic Square due to the poor quality of the ground and had to take place separately. The finish at the Olympic Stadium was not possible for skaters and had to take place outside the stadium.

These two cost factors as well as the inconsistent measurement of the skater route made the run less and less attractive for skaters. At its peak in 2003, the skaters made up a little over 20 percent of the participants with over 1400 entries for the “25 km from Berlin”. As a result, more and more inline speed skaters left Berlin and it culminated in 2007 with a negative record of under 600 participants (the main run recorded an enormous decline in participants in the same year).

In 2008, the ISTAF took over the organization and deleted inline skating entirely from the program. The statement that one wanted to stop the downward trend was incomprehensible, because suddenly a not to be despised part of athletes disappeared.
