Róbert Štefko

Róbert Štefko (born May 28, 1968 in Košice ) is a Slovak long-distance runner .

Life

In 1991 he was Czechoslovakian champion over 5000 m and 10,000 m , in 1992 again over 10,000 m.

After the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, he started for Slovakia until 2003 . During this time he was twice national champion in the 1500 m (1993, 1997), once in the 10,000 m (2003), once in the half marathon (2000) and once in cross-country running (1993).

In 1993 he won the Paris half marathon . The following year he was fourth over 10,000 m at the European Athletics Championships in Helsinki . Only 0.07 s separated him from the bronze medalist Stéphane Franke . At the World Athletics Championships in Gothenburg in 1995 , he was eliminated over 5000 m in the preliminary run as well as at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta over 10,000 m.

After that, he focused on running on the road . In 1997 he was seventh in the New York City Marathon , in 1998 sixth in the London Marathon and in 1999 he won the Košice Marathon .

In 2000 he came in 15th place in the Lake Biwa marathon , won the 25 km from Berlin and came fourth in the Broloppet . He had to give up at the marathon of the Olympic Games in Sydney .

The following year he was fourth in the Berlin Half Marathon , finished 29th at the World Half Marathon Championships in Bristol and was eleventh at the New York City Marathon.

In 2004 he was naturalized in the Czech Republic. A fourth place in the Prague Half Marathon was followed by a third place in the Prague Marathon . He was not only national champion over this distance, but had also qualified for the Olympic Games in Athens , where he finished 63rd.

In 2004 and from 2006 to 2010 he was Czech champion in the half marathon. He was also seventh in the Prague half marathon in 2005 and 2006 and again national marathon champion in 2008 with 15th overall place in the Prague marathon.
