The Berlin Half Marathon (2019 GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON) is a German road and fun run , which, usually in late March or early April, in an annual Berlin takes place. It emerged in 1990 from the SCC Half Marathon in West Berlin , which had existed since 1984, and the East Berlin Peace Run, which had existed since 1981 (which was known as the Lichtenberg Marathon in its first year ). Like the Berlin Marathon , the half marathon is organized by the SC Charlottenburg sports club and organized by SCC EVENTS GmbH .

Today's Berlin half marathon includes a race for inline skaters , wheelchair users , hand bikers and runners . In all competitions, 21.0975 km must be completed.

route

After reunification , the half marathon always ran through the east and west of the city. Although there have been minor changes in the course of the route over the years, the fact that the start and finish area are located at Alexanderplatz remained unchanged .

From 2011 to 2018, the half marathon route began and ended on Karl-Marx-Allee via Unter den Linden and through the Brandenburg Gate to the west. The athletes pass the Victory Column to Charlottenburg Palace , where they turn south. It goes back to the city center via Kurfürstendamm . The rest of the route runs over Potsdamer Platz , past Checkpoint Charlie and back over Leipziger Strasse to the start / finish area.

New route since 2019

Since 2019 the start (and also the finish area) has been on Straße des 17. Juni . From there the route runs over Ernst-Reuter-Platz to Charlottenburg Palace . The route then runs over Kurfürstendamm , past Potsdamer Platz and across Breite Straße to Gendarmenmarkt . The goal is reached shortly after passing through the Brandenburg Gate on Straße des 17. Juni.

Inline skating half marathon

The Frenchman Ewen Fernandez set the current course record in 2017 with 30:11 minutes.

In 1997 the inline skating competition was held for the first time. At that time, the race still took place on a commuter route ( Karl-Marx-Allee , Grunerstraße , Alexanderstraße) that had to be driven ten times. Since 1999, inline skaters have started just before the runners' race and completed the identical route. For most inline speed skaters in Germany, the half marathon is the first big competition of the year, so that Berlin becomes the venue for the newly formed teams and their drivers. In addition, the Berlin Half Marathon has been the first stop of the German Inline Cup (GIC) since 2008 .
