Paul Malakwen Kosgei (born April 22, 1978 in Elgeyo-Marakwet County ) is a Kenyan long-distance runner and former world record holder in road running .

In his youth he set a junior world record in the 3,000 meter obstacle course and was seventh in this discipline at the 1999 World Athletics Championships in Seville. In 1997 he won bronze in the junior races of the World Cross Country Championships . In other participations he won bronze in the short distance in 1998 and 2000 and silver in 1999 and was fifth in the long distance in 2001. In 1998 he won the BOclassic , 2000 the Parelloop and 2001 the Giro Media Blenio . At the 2001 World Athletics Championships in Edmonton, he was seventh in the 10,000-meter run .

In 2002 he won the World Half Marathon Championships in Brussels , the African Athletics Championships in Radès over 10,000 meters and the Great North Run . At the Commonwealth Games in Manchester , he won silver over 10,000 meters.

In 2004 he set a world record over this distance of 1:12:45 h at the 25 km from Berlin , which lasted until 2010. In 2006 he set a course record at the Berlin Half Marathon with 59:07 minutes.

In 2007 he switched to the 42.195 km distance. At the Hamburg Marathon he only finished 14th in 2:14:15 h, at the Amsterdam Marathon he climbed to 2:09:31 h, but since the race was one of the fastest in history, it was only enough there for tenth place. He also finished seventh in the Lisbon half marathon and sixth in the Portugal half marathon . In 2008 he finished eighth in the Paris Marathon and fourth in the Rotterdam Half Marathon , and in 2009 sixth in the Reims Marathon .

In 2010 he finished sixth in the 25 km from Berlin; his world record over this distance was broken in the same race by Samuel Kiplimo Kosgei . In autumn he won his first victory over the full distance at the Maratona d'Italia and set a course record of 2:09:00 h on the course, which was not suitable for the best list because of its gradient.

Paul Malakwen Kosgei is trained by Gabriele Nicola. He is married and has two children.
