Mareike Thum (born June 27, 1991 in Darmstadt ) is a German inline speed skater .

Career

Mareike Thum grew up in Darmstadt and started roller sports in early childhood . In 2001 she switched from figure skating to inline speed skating. In 2005 Thum was nominated for the first time for the Junior European Championships in Cardano al Campo , Italy. The following year she achieved her first major international successes with four gold medals over various routes on the track and on the road at the Junior European Championships in Martinsicuro , Italy. In the same year Thum was nominated for the Junior World Championships in the South Korean Anyang and reached there with the junior relay third place on the road.

In 2008 Thum achieved the greatest international success of her career to date with the gold medal in the elimination race at the Junior World Championships in Gijón .

Since 2009 she has been taking part in the active women’s world and European championships. In her first year she was able to win a world championship title with the women's relay at the World Cup . At the EM in the same year, she also won a gold medal with the relay. Her best individual placements at the World Cup so far are two bronze medals over 10,000 m points, which she won in 2009 and 2010.

In 2013 she won silver over 1000 m on the track at the World Games in Cali ( Colombia ). In the following year she was able to repeat the performance and won silver over 1000 m on the track at the World Championships in Rosario , Argentina .

At the World Games 2017 in Wroclaw , Poland , Mareike Thum led the German team as the flag bearer at the opening ceremony. She started the competitions the next day , but was disqualified in her second race and therefore also banned from the next 1000 m race. In the following race over 15,000 m elimination on the track, she was able to secure the bronze medal. In the race over 20,000 m on the road, she again took bronze. Mareike Thum was able to celebrate a successful conclusion in the 500 m sprint on the road with her first gold medal at the World Games. For winning the gold medal she was awarded the silver laurel leaf by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier .

She trains at ERSG Darmstadt . She is a member of the sports promotion group of the Hessian Police and has been part of the Arena Geisingen team since 2015.
