The Inline Speed Skating European Championships are an annual continental championship that is awarded and monitored by the European umbrella organization Confédération Européenne de Roller Skating - CERS. For many European countries this is also a qualification for the World Championships, which are also held annually .
A major change took place in the 1990s when the classic roller skates ( roller speed skates ) were replaced by the new inline skates . After a transitional period in which both sports equipment could be used, in the end hardly anyone ran with roller skates (it is still allowed to start with roller skates in competitions). The competition course at the European Championships will be held on rail and road courses, interrupted by a day of rest. From 1996 the long distance races ( inline marathon ) were added, which are held on a street circuit .
