BIG direkt healthy is open nationwide and, according to its own information, looks after more than 414,000 insured persons and 100,000 employers. It has a few branches (in Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Cologne and Hamburg) and has been offering its services as a direct health insurance fund since it was founded, making it Germany's first direct health insurance fund. The contribution rates should have always been below the average rate of statutory health insurance (GKV) since it was founded . A logo relaunch (including a name change) was carried out on July 1, 2009: the short form “BIG Gesundheit” became “BIG direkt healthy”. On January 1, 2015, the company health insurance fund of Victoria and DAS insurance companies was merged .

Contribution rates

Since January 1, 2009 the contribution rates have been standardized by the legislator. After the statutory reduction in contributions from January 1, 2015, BIG will raise an income-related additional contribution of 0.7 percent of the underlying income from this date . In 2016, BIG raised the additional contribution to 1.0 percent, and in April 2020 it increased the additional contribution to 1.3 percent.

Healthy Hub

Together with four other health insurance companies ( mhplus , HEK , IKK Südwest , SBK ), BIG launched the so-called Healthy Hub in 2017. The aim of the Healthy Hub is to enable start-ups from the digital health sector to enter the health market. However, this should not be about financing and profit sharing, but primarily about a market test of the digital offers - all five health insurance companies together reach around three million insured persons in Germany.

Alexa skill

At the beginning of October 2019, BIG published a free Alexa skill that is supposed to help babies with difficulty falling asleep. The skill relies on white noise , which, according to a study from 1990, very effectively promotes falling asleep quickly. Eight different noises are used, such as a hairdryer, extractor hood, a moving car or vacuum cleaner noises.
