Markus Ryffel (born February 5, 1955 in Bern ) is a former Swiss long-distance runner . 30 years after the end of his career, he is still the holder of the Swiss record over 3000 and 5000 meters.

Career

His greatest success was winning the silver medal in the 5000 meter run in 13: 07.54 minutes at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , after finishing fifth over the same distance at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow .

At the European Athletics Championships in 1978 he came second in the 5000 meter run (13: 28.66 min). In the same year he was voted Swiss Sportsman of the Year .

Two gold, one silver and one bronze medals resulted from the European Indoor Championships. He also came third at the World Cup in Montreal in 1979. He is 19 times Swiss champion and still holds the Swiss records over 3000 and 5000 meters.

He was also extremely successful in street races. He won u. a. nine times at the Murten run , four times at the Grand Prix of Bern , three times at the Greifensee run , twice at the Zurich New Year's run and once each at the 25 km from Berlin and the Basel city run .

Markus Ryffel started for the city ​​gymnastics club in Bern . Following his sporting career, he founded a sporting goods company with his brother, Urs Ryffel, and Markus Bill. Today Markus Ryffel is the managing director of the Bern branch of Ryffel Running AG , which, in addition to the sports shop, also runs a mail order business and offers various courses. Ryffel Running is also u. a. responsible for marketing the Swiss Women's Run . The Ryffel brothers are significantly involved in the organization of the international Greifensee run .

His son Christoph Ryffel is also successful as a runner; he belongs to the Swiss elite in long-distance and cross-country running.
