Adel Mechaal (born December 5, 1990 in Tétouan ) is a Spanish athlete of Moroccan origin who specializes in middle-distance runs . In 2017 he became European indoor champion over 3000 meters .

Athletic career

Adel Mechaal has been taking part in medium-distance competitions in Spain since 2009. After numerous competitions at national level, he qualified first for the indoor world championships in Sopot in 2014 and then for the European championships in Zurich , each over the 1500 meter distance . In both competitions he was eliminated in the semifinals. Together with his teammates he took part in the world relay games in Nassau in the 4 x 1,500 meter race, in which the Spanish quartet finished fourth.

In 2015 he started over 3000 meters indoors for the first time and was able to achieve sixth place at the European Indoor Championships in Prague . Also in 2015 he started taking part in international cross-country competitions. At the World Championships in Guiyang , however, he could not achieve a front placement. At the World Championships in Beijing he ran over 1500 meters into the semifinals, in the end he finished 37th. Things went better at the European Cross Country Championships in Hyères. There he won the bronze medal in the 10 km race. In 2016 Mechaal won the silver medal over 5000 meters at the European Championships in Amsterdam . At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he competed next to the 5000, also over 1500 meters. In both competitions he reached the semifinals.

In 2017 he celebrated his greatest sporting success to date with the European title over 3000 meters from the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade . At the World Championships in London in August he was fourth in the 1500 meters. At the 2017 European Cross Country Championships in Šamorín, Slovakia, he also won bronze in the 10 km race. In 2018 he ran at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham to fifth place over 3000 meters. At the European Championships in Berlin , he then started over 5000 and over 10,000 meters . He set his personal best on the second route in May. While he had to give up in the 5000 meter race, he finished fourth over 10,000 meters.

In 2019 Mechaal set his personal best of 3: 33.91 minutes. over 1500 meters. Over this distance he competed in the World Championships in Doha in October . There he was eliminated as eighth in his advance.
