The 1st IAAF World Relays (unofficially also referred to as the 1st Relay World Championships ) took place on May 24th and 25th, 2014 at the Thomas Robinson Stadium in Nassau .
Competitions and qualification standards
For the first time the IAAF discharged World Relay competitions were held in five disciplines, rather than each for men and women. Including the Olympic distances 4 × 100 and 4 × 400 meters , as well as the rarely held disciplines 4 × 200 , 4 × 800 and 4 × 1500 meters.
The winners of the disciplines were not official world champions. World champions over 4 × 100 and 4 × 400 meters remained the winners of the 2013 World Championships in Moscow. Instead of a medal table, a points system was used to determine the order of the participating nations across disciplines. The winning nation received the Golden Baton .
For the two Olympic courses, the IAAF established qualification guidelines in advance; for the 4 × 100 m relay, 38.90 s were required for the men and 43.80 s for the women for direct qualification, for the 4 × 400 m -Stay for men 3: 04.10 min and for women 3: 33.00 min. The qualification period extended from January 1, 2013 to May 12, 2014. If a maximum number of 24 participating teams per discipline had not yet been reached, additional teams were invited to the competitions according to the IAAF leaderboard.
The first eight teams over 4 × 100 and 4 × 400 meters were directly qualified for the 2015 World Athletics Championships in Beijing .
No qualification standards were set for the other disciplines, the maximum possible number of participating teams was 24 per discipline.
Participating Nations
Based on the above qualification standards, 43 national athletics federations sent a total of 589 female and male athletes to the World Championships.
