Ferguson Cheruiyot Rotich (born November 30, 1989 in Kericho ) is a Kenyan athlete who specializes in the 800-meter distance . In 2014 he and his teammates won the gold medal at the IAAF World Relays with the 4 x 800 meter relay.

Athletic career

Ferguson Cheruiyot Rotich began to take part in international competitions comparatively late, against the background that the competitive situation in Kenya is traditionally significant, especially on the 800 meter distance. In 2013 he started in the IAAF Diamond League over 800 meters and was able to secure a ticket for the World Championships in Moscow as runner-up in the national championships . There he qualified for the semi-finals, but was disqualified in it.

In 2014 Rotich finished fourth at the African Championships in Marrakech in 1: 49.10 min . Together with the 4 x 800 meter relay, he previously won gold at the IAAF World Relays in the Bahamas in May . In 2015 he competed again at the IAAF World Relays in the Bahamas, this time in the medley competition, in which four athletes run a total of 4000 meters, with each relay runner running a different distance. At the World Championships in Beijing, Rotich stayed in fourth place with a time of 1: 46.35 minutes, as before at the African Championships. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro a year later, he was fifth in 1: 43.55 min. Rotich ended the 2016 season as the Diamond League winner over the 800 meters.

At the 2017 World Championships in London, Rotich failed in the semifinals as third of his run because he was not among the fastest third-placed athletes and ended up in 15th place. He also won the 4 x 800 meter relay in 2017 , after the 2014 world championship , his second medal at the World Relay Games. In 2018 he took part in the African Championships for the second time . There he ran in 1: 46.33 minutes to fifth place.

In 2019 Rotich first set his best time of 1: 42.54 minutes in July and then celebrated his greatest individual sporting success to date in August by winning the bronze medal at the World Championships in Doha.
