Michael Mathieu (born June 24, 1984 in Freeport ) is a Bahamian sprinter who specializes in the 400-meter run .

Athletic career

Michael Mathieu gained his first international experience at the Pan American Junior Championships 2003 in Bridgetown , where he won the bronze medal over 400 meters and finished fourth over 200 meters. In 2006 he finished fourth in the 400-meter run at the U23 NACAC championships in Santo Domingo and sixth at the Central America and Caribbean Games in Cartagena . In 2007 he finished fourth in the individual competition at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, as well as the gold medal with the Bahamian 4 x 400 meter relay. He then won the silver medal with the relay at the World Championships in Osaka behind the United States and ahead of Poland. In 2008 he retired with the relay in the preliminary round of the indoor world championships in Valencia , as well as in the individual competition over 400 meters, later won the silver medals in the individual and with the relay at the CAC championships in Cali . He also qualified for the Olympic Games in Beijing , where he and Andretti Bain , Andrae Williams and Chris Brown won the silver medal behind the United States in 2: 58.03 min . In the individual competition, he was eliminated in the semifinals with 45.56 s .

In 2009 he finished sixth over 200 meters at the Central American and Caribbean Championships in Havana and was eliminated in the first round of the World Championships in Berling over 400 meters. In 2010 he reached the semi-finals in the individual competition at the World Indoor Championships in Doha and could not finish the final run with the relay. During the outdoor season he qualified for the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi , where he finished fourth in both the individual race and the relay. In 2011 he won the gold medal over 200 meters and with the 4 x 400 meter relay at the CAC championships in Mayagüez . He later took part in the World Championships in Daegu over 200 meters and had to break off his semi-final run there. He then finished fourth at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara . In 2012 he improved the national record over 200 meters to 20.16 s and qualified for the Olympic Games in London . Together with Chris Brown, Demetrius Pinder and Ramon Miller , he set a new national record with the Bahamian season in 2: 56.72 minutes in the final . The quartet surprisingly secured the gold medal in front of the favored US team. Over 200 meters he was disqualified in the semifinals due to a false start.

Two years later he retired with the relay in the preliminary round of the World Indoor Championships in Sopot , but took second place in the World Relays in the Bahamas . At the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow he won the silver medal behind the English in 3: 00.51 min. In the individual competition over 200 meters, he reached the semi-finals. At the World Relays 2015 they again reached second place and he qualified over 400 meters for the World Championships in Beijing , where he was eliminated in the semifinals with 45.43 s . With the Bahamian relay he was disqualified in the preliminary stages. Previously, he finished fourth with the season at the Pan American Games in Toronto . In 2016 he was eliminated in the first round of the 400 meters at the World Indoor Championships in Portland and won the silver medal behind the United States in a new national record of 3: 04.75 minutes. With the relay he took part for the third time in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and won there with 2: 58.49 min in the final, the bronze medal behind the USA and Jamaica.

In 2017 the relay took part in the World Championships in London , where they were eliminated in the first round . In 2018 he again took part in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast , where he reached the semi-finals over 400 meters. With the relay he was used in the run-up, but later also won the silver medal behind the team from Botswana.

In 2006 and 2007 Mathieu became the Bahamian champion in the 400-meter run. He is a graduate of Texas Tech University in Lubbock .
