Fred Newhouse
Fred Newhouse (actually: Frederick Vaughn Newhouse ; born November 8, 1948 in Haney Grove , Texas ) is a former American sprinter who was successful in the 400-meter run in the 1970s .
At the US national championships he reached the finals four times:
- 1971: 3rd in 45.7 s
- 1972: 3rd in 45.3 s
- 1975: 2nd in 45.22 s
- 1976: 3rd in 45.20 s
In 1973 he won the indoor championship over 600 yards in 1: 11.0 minutes.
For Fred Newhouse, four major international successes have been recorded:
- In 1971 at the Pan American Games in Cali he won two medals:
- Silver over 400 meters in 45.09 s behind his compatriot John Smith (gold in 44.60 s) and in front of the Peruvian Fernando Acevedo (bronze in 45.30 s)
- Gold as a member of the US 4 x 400 meter relay (team: Smith, Dale Alexander , Newhouse as third runner and Tommy Turner ) in 3: 00.63 min
- In 1976 at the Olympic Games in Montreal , he won two medals:
- Silver over 400 meters in 44.40 s behind the Cuban Alberto Juantorena (gold in 44.26 s) and in front of his compatriot Herman Frazier (bronze in 44.95 s)
- Gold as a member of the US 4 x 400 meter relay (team: Frazier, Benny Brown , Newhouse as third runner and Maxie Parks ) in 2: 58.65 minutes with a large lead over Poland (silver in 3:01 , 43 min).
The 44.40 seconds run in Montreal is his personal best.
